This Day in History: April 1, 1957

Videos are stronger than words. Happy April! FYI: After this was aired the station was flooded with requests for instructions on how to grow these trees. The stations response was hysterical! "Put spaghetti in a plate of tomato sauce and hope for the best." And that my bloggy friends is a great April Fools Day joke!

This Day in History: Coca Cola

According to my radio, Coca Cola was introduced this day in history in (I think) 1890. (I didn't catch the exact year) Coke was made of wine and cocaine. During prohibition the wine was changed to syrup and, well, cocaine was outlawed. Here is some history, lesson plans, recipes and other uses for Coke.

This Day in History: Little Drummer Boy and Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer

On this day in history, November 30, 1977, David Bowie appeared on the Bing Crosby Christmas special. They sang Peace On Earth / Little Drummer Boy

Also on this day in 1979 the hit song, that of us long to hear during the holidays, Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer
was released. By 1984 it hit the top of the charts and in 2000 a tv special was made of it. You can read the details here.

This Day in History: Entering King Tut's Tomb

On November 25, 1922 King Tut's tomb was unsealed and entered. They found it infested with cobras. The workers were having some trouble finding the entrance when the water boy, who was playing outside, found a step that led to the tomb. This Day in History: The Gettysburg Address

On this day in 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave his infamous speech in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain - that thisnation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
