Father's Day and "The Drunk Lady in the Ditch"

We celebrated Father's Day with my dad tonight. It was very impromptu but the best of get togethers are, I believe. Cool and I dropped the kids off at my mom and dad's to help with the lawn work and we headed to the store to buy to buy picnicking supplies. Steak that is.

The boys, for a Father's Day gift to grandpa, mowed and trimmed his lawn. Sweet then blew the leaves off his porch. Cool grilled the most wonderful, medium done steaks, while mom and I made beans, salad, garlic bread and sipped on some fuzzy navels (just so we could use up the orange juice).

We dined on the patio, laughing and enjoying each other's company as well as the food that was set before us. After the food was gone and the dishes were done Dill and Sweet blew bubbles in the back yard and did some ninja thing to pop them. Sweet showed off her gymnastics skills by attempting to do 50 cartwheels through the back yard and Chip sat at the table talking to Grandpa about the armed forces and war. We left about 6:30.

When we got home we found that our small town was having a town wide party where the main street was closed off and a beer tent was set up. We went home to have music reverberate through our house because it was being played so loud up town.

A while later Cool went outside, came back in and said, "Sit with me there is a drunk lady walking outside." By the time we got out there the drunk lady had fallen straight into our ditch and was laying there. Cool, being the good citizen that he is, went over and picked her up. She was so drunk she could hardly sit up. She had her 16 year old granddaughter with her who wanted to help, but just couldn't.

So, Cool put his shoes on and got the van to drive them home. It took a good 3 minutes to load the drunk lady into the van. She wasn't moving very well. In fact she was pretty much just dragging her feet as Cool was trying to walk her to the van. There were a couple of times I thought she was going to fall down the hill of the ditch and take Cool with her. After driving her the 2 blocks home, it took him another 5 minutes to get her into her house. She was completely trashed.

So, besides work and gymnastics, that was our day. It was full of family, laughter, fun and the occasional drunkards falling in our ditch.

Your site popped up when I did a search about getting children “unplugged” while doing some publicity for my newest children’s book with Farrar Straus & Giroux (yes, authors have to do their own publicity these days, and it’s all online).

Because of your interest in getting kids unplugged, I thought you might like to take a look at “Too Much Flapdoodle” (http://us.macmillan.com/toomuchflapdodle). It’s a chapter book, aimed at 7-12 year-olds, about a boy who is completely “plugged in” until he has to go spend the summer on the farm of his eccentric Great Aunt and Great Uncle. If you’d like more information, or possibly a review copy, just let me know.

I’d love it if you could consider it for recommendation, if you have a way to do it on your web site.

Sincerely
